Tomul Chhot (Rice Flour Roti)

Dear readers,

Dhivya here, Heartfelt apologies as I couldn't regularly contribute here. A ceremony set for August, and Yes !! it is my wedding. Season to shop & celebrate with kith & kin :)) Keeps me busy all the while & amidst the hectic time, i am giving you a quick Kashmiri snack item - TOMUL CHHOT (made from rice flour).

It is very easy to make, and while I was preparing this exquisite Kashmir item; my mom popped in the  kitchen asking me if I was making "Akki roti" - a Karnataka breakfast item. This is similar to it but tastes very different from akki roti.

In Kashmir & some village parts in and around Tomul Chhot is made on festivals like Shivratri, Doony Mavas, and it has a great importance in their meal.

Ingredients
  1. Rice flour : 1 cup
  2. Salt and ajwain (carom seeds) as per taste and flavor (optional).
  3. Pure ghee (optional) : 2 tbsps
  4. green chillies : 1 med-sized - for flavor (optional)
  5. Hot water for kneading.
  6. 1 tawa (flat pan).

Method

  1. Mix salt, ajwain, green chillies and ghee in flour
  2. Now knead the flour with hot water till soft dough is formed.
  3. Pick up a chunk of soft dough, make it round between your palms and flatten it into a round shape by your palms in the shape of a chapatti. I used a plastic sheet.

  4. Preheat the tawa and put the chapatti on it. Now put it upside down till it is ready.
  5. Pick it from tawa and put it directly on full flame of stove as is done in case of simple chapatti.

  6. If you want to apply ghee again, you can apply it after step 4.
  7. Tomul chott is ready to enjoy with masala chai (Kashmiris have it with Sheer chay or kehwa - cardamom flavoured green tea)

Enjoy it as a mid-evening tea-time snack !!

DIVI !!
