Pearl millet cakes/kambu idli

Kambu/Pearl Millet is good  source of  iron. Usually vegetarians would lack iron, absorption of iron would be less, eating Pearl millet will help them with iron. Pearl millet can be ground as flour and can be with dosa / idli batter , it can be made as kanji for morning breakfast.
My son has iron deficiency so thought would give him pearl millet and decided to make idli/ dosa, as he fussy eater made him idlis.



Ingredients:

Kambu/pearl millet - 1 cup
Rice: 1 cup
Urud dhal - 1/4 cup
Methi seeds - 1 /2 tbsp
Water for soaking
salt, pepper as required

Method:
  • Combine kambu, rice in a bowl and soak in water for 3 hours
  • In a seperate bowl soak urud dhal and methi seeds.
  • Grind kambu/millet, rice to a dough consistency/paste.
  • Now in the same grinder / food processor grind  urad dhal, methi seeds.
  • Now combine both grinded paste, add salt,pepper and allow it to ferment for 4 hours.



  • After fermentation its ready for idlis.
  • Prepare the idli plates by greasing it spraying/ smearing oil.


  • Ladle the dough into the idli plates, fill 3/4 th as it would rise when steamed.


  • Steam it for 3-4 minutes , the inserted tooth pick must come out clean.


  • Serve with chutney/sambar/kadappa sambar.
