I am so reminded of my grandma every time i do this. It is a very easy breakfast item and very filling. Poha / Aval / Flattened rice is known to fill your stomach by absorbing the water in stomach and easily digestible. She used to make it for me when i return back from school along with a big cup of filter coffee. It is very healthy, those who diet can have this often without any further thoughts.
Takes roughly about 10-12 minutes.
Ingredients :
Poha / Aval / Flattened rice - 2 cups
Onion - 1 big (finely chopped)
Tamarind juice - 1/4 cup
Turmeric - 1/4 tsp
Boiled potato - 1 (cut into cubes)
Asafoetida - 1 pinch
Salt - To taste
Mustard - 1 tsp
Jeera - 1/2 tsp
Green chilli - 1 (chopped finely)
Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Coriander leaves - for garnish
Chana dal - 1 tsp
Oil - 2 tbsp
Method :
1. Wash the poha and soak it in tamarind juice for about 2 minutes. Do not add excess water or juice else it will get mashed up. Just until it absorbs water is good
2. Strain the excess water. spread it in a plate / dish
3. Heat a pan, add oil. Add mustard & let it splutter. Add jeera, chana dal, chilli and curry leaves
4. Add chopped onion, asafoetida and toss it until the raw smell of onion vanishes
5. Add the boiled potato, poha and mix well
6. Add the Turmeric, salt & stir for 2 minutes
7. Garnish with coriander and serve hot
