Rice & Lentil Khichdi / Arisi-Paruppu Pongal

My aunt gave me this recipe when my hubby was running temperature and unwell. This is a very easy to prepare dish when you are ill or sick, it gives good strength as it is protein rich and easily digestible by patients. Just Wash and soak lentils with rice for 30 minutes and pressure cook together with water for 4 whistles and enjoy with Kadhi/papad/chutney/sambar/pickle or any vegetable available with you.

Lets see the recipe !!

Ingredients :

Rice (chawal) - 1 cup
Green moong dal - 1/2 cup
Yellow moong dal / payatham paruppu - 1/4 cup
Toor dal / masoor dal - 1 handful
Onion - 1 (roughly chopped)
Ginger - 1 inch stick
Garlic - 5 pods (crushed)
Water - 4 cups (1 cup rice : 4 cups water for a nice mushy texture)
Salt - to taste

For tempering :

Ghee - 1/2 tbsp
Whole black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
Cumin/Jeera pdr - 1/2 tsp
Coriander / Dhania pdr - 1/2 tsp
Coriander / Dhania - for garnish

Method :

1. Wash and soak the rice and lentils for 30 minutes. Transfer all the ingredients except those listed under tempering and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

2. Open the cooker after the pressure releases and add the tempering made from ghee.
3. Garnish with coriander and serve hot !!

It is a comforting and soothing meal while being sick/lazy/you want to make a simple meal.
Enjoy the khichdi and relax !
